Social Fabric: A Community Textile Activation

Choice Properties welcomes Nuit Blanche, Toronto’s free, all night celebration of contemporary art, produced by the City of Toronto in partnership with the city’s arts community, to West Block. This year marks its 20th anniversary. Since launching in 2006, Nuit Blanche has grown into one of the largest contemporary art events in North America, transforming public spaces across the city into all night art experiences for over a million visitors each year. This milestone edition, themed Tomorrow’s Memories, looks back on two decades of artists, curators, and communities who have shaped the event, offering both a reflection on where Nuit Blanche has been and a look at where it’s headed next.
At West Block, this year’s celebration takes the form of Social Fabric: A Community Textile Activation, presented by SHEEEP Studio and curated by our community partner, The Bentway.

Programming
What you’ll do: Weave, knot, and attach fabric pieces by hand, guided step by step by on-site facilitators
Inspired by local art: Patterns drawn from مجلس Majles / Sitting Room, the Anahita Akhavan mural installed on the West Block staircases earlier this summer, itself inspired by the visual language of Iranian rug making
Built by the community: By Sunday morning, the staircase landing and gathering areas at West Block will hold a work built entirely by the community that visited, a lasting record of everyone who added a stitch
Family-friendly programming: Storytime with SHEEEP Studio (7:00 to 8:00 PM), poetry readings with Sam Sabzevari and Reza Nik (8:30 to 10:00 PM), and early morning weaving for parents with babies (6:00 to 7:00 AM)
About SHEEEP
SHEEEP is a Toronto based experimental studio working at the intersection of community, education, activism, culture, and architecture. It is directed by Reza Nik, an artist, licensed architect, and Assistant Professor in the Teaching Stream at the Daniels Faculty, University of Toronto, alongside collaborators Sam Cruxton and Jocelyn Hernandez.

West Block is located at 500 Lake Shore Blvd W, Toronto, on the northeast corner of Lake Shore Boulevard and Bathurst Street, right next to Gong Cha and opposite Shoppers Drug Mart. The location is easy to reach by TTC, car, bike, or on foot, making it accessible from across the city. Several streetcar and bus routes run nearby along Lake Shore Boulevard and Bathurst Street. Once you arrive, on-site signage and staff will help guide you and make your visit as smooth as possible.
